Diverticular disease

Diverticulosis

Diverticular disease (small babbles at the bowel wall) may cause fresh red bleeding and diverticulae may perforate and cause diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis may present with a condition of variable severity degrees, ranging from a simple and localized abdominal infection to faecal peritonitis.

Practically speaking, in the acute phase we operate only when the patient has diffuse peritonitis and in the chronic phase when diverticulitis happens often and/or is severe, or has caused stenosis.

There is nothing we can do to avoid neither the development of diverticulae nor their perforation, except to improve constipation when it exists.
