The prolapse of large bowel through the anus causes not only manageable local problems but may also have serious complications as bleeding, incontinence and necrosis. This disease should be always operated.
There are two groups of surgical procedures, those performed though the abdomen and those performed through the anus.
The latter are considered best for elderly patients in bad performance status, as there is no need for general anesthesia. These operations may lead to stool evacuation problems and have more recurrences.
